Negative taken for December 9, 1959, Arkansas Gazette article "Cherokee General Fought Well as Confederate," B1:2. At Polson Cemetery near Grove, Delaware County, Oklahoma, is a marker to Major Ridge, an early leader of the Cherokee in the eastern United States. Ridge fought alongside American forces during the War of 1812 in Major Morgan's Cherokee Regiment. He was killed by a rival Cherokee group in Oklahoma in 1839.

Although the Treaty of Hopewell (1785) defined the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation and the U.S., Congress during the Confederation period was unable to keep white squatters off Cherokee lands.
